Morphological Description
2-2.5cm cap featured whitish unequal subdistant gills with a beige-like hue at certain angles. Cap has a faint blue/purple-tinged brown colour. No (good) spore print, but the microscopic spores measure 9-11um by 6um. The visible cystidia measured ~20um. (MB note: The cheilocystidia had multiple, slender, sometimes hypha-like and highly branched appendages.) The most notable features of the Mycena are its quick bruising: both the gill tissue and the stipe turn colour to a purplish brown when touched. Furthermore, the spores have an amyloid reaction to Melzer's solution while the trama has a red, dextrinoid reaction. It should be noted that the gill attachment is verging on uncinate.

This fungus appears identical to Rod Stirling's UBC herbarium specimen F14061, collected at the same site the previous year. Both DNA sequences and morphology indicate that this is a second collection of the same mystery Mycena from Capilano. There seemed to be many similairities to Mycena amicta, but this specimen lacked the requisite pubescence and was not blue in colour. The reddish-brown staining of these specimens is not reported for otherwise similar Mycena pura. In microscopic and staining reactions, these specimens resemble Mycena maculata. They differed from M. maculata in that they were not growing in clumps, they had a definite purple colour, and they were not on wood.
Habitat
In humus/ decaying ground litter. Damp, sloping coniferous forest growing alongside a river and reservoir. Mycena found in densely wooded area, beneath a fallen tree.
