Morphological Description
Macroscopic features of this fungus include a fruiting body height of 9-13cm. At its largest width the specimen is 0.4-0.7cm. The fungus is gregarious, with around five individuals in a tuft. The mature specimens are greyish-brown in colour with a very slight hint of lilac; the younger speciments are cream coloured. The fungus lacks a cap, and is fusiform, with a tapered apex (~0.2cm) and a slightly larger base of 0.3-0.4cm. The stipe is hollow, and is slightly fibrous in texture. The stalk spirals (~2 complete turns in a mature specimen) and is compressed (longitudinally sulcate). The fungus tends to be quite simple, and only a single tip is forked. The flesh of the mushroom is brittle and fragile. A chalky white substance coats the outer surface of the mushroom (its spores). The odour of the fungus, although weak, is slightly reminiscent of the smell exuded by grocery store mushrooms. No taste can be detected.
Microscopic features of the fungus include a basidiospore length ranging from 6.25um to 8.5um. The width of the basidiospores vary from 3.25um to 5um. The basidiospores are white, and are ellipsoid to oblong in shape. Large oil droplets can be seen in many of the spores. Hyaline and cylindric cysidia are present in abundance. The cystidia are projecting and contain granules. The cystidia vary greatly in size, ranging in length from 51um to 125um, and in width from 5um to 6.5um.
