The specimen here is differentiated from a similar species, Pluteus atromarginatus, by black coloured gill edges, not present on the gills of Pluteus cervinus. Differentiation from another species, Pluteus petasatus, can be made by observing scales present on the cap of Pluteus petasatus but absent on Pluteus cervinus. Furthermore, Pluteus petasatus is generally caespitose.
Habitat
Specimen was located off the main trail growing solitary on a tree stump.
