| Notes
|
Mushroom pileus is 5.3 cm in diameter and 1 cm in thickness, the cap is uniformly black in colour and velvet/suede-like. The cap shape is convex, with an acute/clean margin, smooth in texture, and a margin type of entire. The stipe is central and red in colour with red/yellow streaking (striated). The stipe is 5.5 cm tall and 1.1 cm thick. The stipe is pliable, hollow, with a scarce basal tomentum. This genus lacks any form of veil (pores exposed early). The hymenophore has round pores and is yellow in colour. Small and round-to-angular pores ranging from 0.5-1 mm in diameter. Underside of cap exhibits mild to moderate bruising/bluing within a few minutes following exposure. The tubes are adnate around the stipe, spacing is close, thickness is moderate, consistency is rigid. Tubes range from 2-5 mm long and 0.5-1.0 mm wide. Pleurocystidia are present but scarce, not encrusted, are smooth, thin-walled and hyaline (in KOH). Cheilocystidia are also present and are more abundant and easier to find than the pleurocystidia. The mushroom does not produce latex, has no distinct smell and tastes bland. Spores are olive-brown in colour (from spore print analysis), and fusiform in shape. This specimen is inamyloid (not stained) by Melzers, the spore wall is thick, the apical pore is absent, and since the spores are smooth - i.e., there is no ornamentation. |
